Natural/organic

Understanding Natural and Organic Products

At Vita Bella Montreal, we pride ourselves on offering a wide selection of natural and organic fresh foods, from fruits and vegetables to meats and cheeses. But what do these terms really mean? In Canada, the definitions are guided by regulations from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and other standards, helping consumers make informed choices about sustainable and healthy eating.

Natural Products:
The term “natural” refers to foods that are minimally processed and free from artificial additives, colors, flavors, or preservatives. According to CFIA guidelines, natural products should not contain synthetic ingredients and must maintain their original form as much as possible. For example, a natural apple would be grown without chemical enhancements and processed without added sugars or dyes. However, “natural” is not as strictly regulated as “organic” in Canada—there’s no mandatory certification process. This means claims can vary by producer, but reputable sources like us ensure they come from sustainable, wild, or unfarmed origins where possible. Natural foods emphasize simplicity and closeness to nature, appealing to those seeking wholesome, unaltered options.

Organic Products:
Organic foods are produced under rigorous standards outlined in the Canadian Organic Regime (COR) and the Canadian Organic Standards (COS), enforced by the CFIA. To be labeled “organic,” a product must contain at least 95% organic ingredients and be certified by an accredited body. This certification prohibits the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, GMOs (genetically modified organisms), irradiation, and sewage sludge in farming. Organic farming focuses on ecological balance, soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare—such as allowing livestock access to outdoors and feeding them organic feed. For instance, our organic Spartan apples from Quebec are grown following these methods, ensuring they’re free from prohibited substances. Imported organics must meet equivalent standards.

Key Differences and Benefits:
While both natural and organic prioritize health and sustainability, organic is legally defined and certified, providing greater assurance against harmful chemicals. Natural is more about processing than production methods. Choosing either supports environmental health, reduces exposure to toxins, and promotes nutrient-rich diets. At Vita Bella, our certified organic and natural selections, like Fair Trade and Non-GMO items, help you enjoy fresh, flavorful meals with peace of mind.
